LEGO THERAPY WORKSHOP

Lego therapy (Legoff, 2004) is a motivating way of developing children’s social communication skills. Adults watch quietly and give the children time to communicate, identify communication breakdowns and discover how to repair them themselves before providing any guidance. This system is also an effective way of developing children’s understanding of their own and other’s thoughts and feelings. It is effective for children with a range of communication difficulties, including those with:

  • Social communication difficulties, ASD or High Functioning Autism
  • Receptive and/or expressive language difficulties
  • Speech intelligibility difficulties

Lego therapy requires 3 participants. Each child is allocated a specific role, which changes each session:

  1. Engineer – who looks at the instructions, describes the Lego pieces required and how to construct the model
  2. Supplier – who listens to the Engineer’s descriptions and finds the brick(s) in the tray
  3. Builder – who listens to the Engineer’s instructions and builds the model

The course aims to enable teaching staff to:

  1. Identify suitable children to include in a Lego Therapy group
  2. Recognise a range of breakdowns in communication
  3. Support children to repair the conversational breakdowns independently

The workshop, which lasts for 2 hours, can be delivered to up to 30 members of staff on site within the educational setting in a staff meeting, twilight training session or inset day.
